Power conditioners

Are there any REALLY shallow power conditioners? Like 2" deep or so? Everything would fit into my 6u shallow rack case but my ART power conditioner won't rack in the back obviously since it's a shallow rack. Right now I have everything racked with the power conditioner sitting on top of my rack.

I could just tape a power bar in there though, but I doubt it offers the protection of my current power conditioner. If it's down to dropping $250 or so on an 8u rack case or $200 on a power conditioner that will fit in my current case, I think I'd rather have the conditioner since places want $80-$100 to ship a rack case to Canuckistan

Also, can someone un-Simmons me?

You have a rack that won't fit a power conditioner? Hell, my G Major is about 8" deep.

I have a Gator shallow rack, the case is about 14" deep or so. Most of my gear goes ALMOST to the rear rails, there's probably about 2" or so where I could rack up the conditioner. Makes it a lot easier to carry, not all unbalanced and shit.

So, your power conditioner is the deepest thing in your rack?

Looking at the dimensions on my Furman, it is around 10" deep. Even then, that should leave you ample room to get the back cover on after you plug everything into it.

That looks about what I need, but like you said it's not really a power conditioner, just a rack mount power bar. Anyone here run their gear off of a power bar for any length of time? I'm sure it's safe, but will the noise be excessive?

Ah, I got you. Honestly, it sounds like you are completely SOL. You need to buy an 8u rack.

What preamp are you using that is not 1U?

I dont have a rack so i just use a power strip with some surge protection and i have never had noise problems  I eventually want to get a 2U rack and throw a Gmajor and a Conditioner in there but i havent gotten around to it.

The Leviton power strip does say it has noise attenuation. I'm guessing it depends a lot on the quality of your power and how sensitive your gear is to noisy or bad power. I've run my gear off a crappy little 4-spot power bar for a while, but i think it was letting noise through. But this is in our rehearsal space, which can be a little dodgy.

Daft as it may sound, but can you get a power conditioning plug, kinda like those RCD plugs? That way you could mount a shallow power strip in your rack and have the conditioning seperate. I know you can get pukka power conditioning extension leads for home cinema and stuff, but you'd only really need a single outlet.

Just realized it won't work, since the plugs are on the other side of the power strip, thus they would need extra space for the plugs. Looks like there's no way around buying another rack case :( I will now have 3 unused rack cases sitting in my damn basement...

I don't think my lids are deep enough. Need 1.7" + lets say like 2" at a bare minimum to keep the plugs from getting fucked up when I put the lids on :( Oh well, was worth a shot anyways.

Get a nice Furman power strip (some of which have conditioning) and secure it in the back with some tape, duct tape, or velcro. 100% of the functionality, 10% of the size, and literally half the cost cause everything rackmount is super expensive.

Wirelessly posted (Mjolnir Q9c: Opera/9.80 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.2.13337/756; U; en) Presto/2.2.0)

Have you tried mounting it vertically, instead of horizontally? Might take some modification, some fancy brackets from a hardware store, and you'll lose some access to the back of your gear while it's loaded in there, but it could work if the 6u rack is tall enough?

Maybe it's just me, but I find the whole "I can't carry it it's too heavy" thing a little silly. Most amp heads are pretty heavy, and most racks are pretty heavy. Deal with it, I guess. I don't ever really have any problems with my 8 space rack, and it's pretty loaded. Wheels are your friend :agreed: all you have to do is lift it into a truck or trailer and lift it back out. No fuss. Easy.

:agreed:

There's a huge difference between even a 50 lb 2x10 and a 95 lb 4x10 in terms of 'haulability.'

My rack is liftable now. It probably weighs about 65 pounds. If I get a molded and semi shallow case like I have now, I don't think it should be that much harder. Also, I'm thinking I may have to go with the 8u simply for rack cooling. I left my rig on for an hour while I was surfing, and it was uncomfortable to leave my hand on the GP3 because of the warmth. It's funny, it's generally power amps that are hot, but the Carvin doesn't really heat up that much.

I'm looking at possibly buying some 40mm fans and building a little 1u fan unit to put above the GP3 too. I guess I'll wait and see how leaving a space empty above it helps.

Belkin : PureAV™ Isolator Home Theater Surge Protector by Belkin

It might not offer the same level of filtering that a top end Furman does (I doubt anything does) but Belkin offer a lifetime warranty covering your connected gear & the powerboard vs Furmans 1 year warranty. Simply based on the info from each companies website my guess is the Belkin is on a similar level to the Furman Merit series but you may be able to fit it in your lid or even mount it to the back of the rack somehow.

He's trying to look cool for the kiddies. And failing.

And s7eve has the idea that I was going for.

It is the current promo pic Dimarzio are using so I think it is new.

On topic I was in town yesterday looking for some gear and I noticed Monster also make filtered powerboards with a similar warranty to Belkin but apparently the Monster boards have better quality filters. I know everyone hates monster (with good reason) but it seems like they have the best product for this application.
