And here I thought Dave had stopped doing drugs:

8. Jeff Young
7. Chris Broderick
6. Mike Albert
5. Al Pitrelli
4. Chris Poland
3. Glen Drover
2. Marty Friedman
1. Kiko Loureiro

No way should Drover be that high, and Broderick be that low. Of course Kiko is number one, but I'm sure Dave would put whoever is in the band at number one. That said, one could make an argument that Kiko may actually be the most technically proficient guitarist on the list.

And for fun, my list:

8. Mike Albert
7. Glen Drover
6. Jeff Young
5. Chris Broderick
4. Al Pitrelli
3. Marty Friedman
2. Kiko Loureiro
1. Chris Poland

I first heard about Angra back in 2005. Saw them live in either 2006 or 2007. Thought they were boring, so I went to the other stage, though, to watch United. I remember people back on ss.org would talk about them from time to time, so I definitely agree with Josh there.

I honestly don't even like the guy's playing. He's a good player, but I always felt he was just in the wrong band.
I mean, I reckon some purist/hipster/old-guy guitarists like him just because he's "the original" but stylistically, I think he's got more flavor to his playing than a bunch of other guys on that list, including Broderick who couldn't turn all of his acrobatic abilities into something memorable.

Marty is my #1 (and #2 isn't even close), but everyone after Poland benefited from a bigger budget and advances in recording that came thereafter. I don't get on with Poland's solo stuff or with OHM either, but I've liked his jam and improv in the last two decades, plus I thought his solos on those two LoG albums were pretty good. Actually, even though most of The System Has Failed was a turd, I thought his playing was one of the high points. :2c:

I'd actually put Dave at the top of the list, because while the lead guitar is great in Megadeth, they were always about the riffs.

Marty is my favorite lead guitarist in Megadeth. After him I guess it would be Chris Poland and Jeff Young, because they appear on actually good albums, then Al Pitrelli. I don't really find any of the leads that memorable outside the first Marty albums anyway. The last few Megadeth albums were so bad that I haven't listened enough to be able to comment on Broderick's or Loureiro's playing in Megadeth.

Marty right on top ..followed by Kiko, even though I have'nt heard him in Megadeth ...or listened to Megadeth in a hell of a long time either (longtime Angra fan though & I've got all his solo stuff/DVD's). I mean as far as Poland goes, I love Peace Sells but the solo's were never the highest point for me..

I'm in the "Broderick is boring" camp because he sounds soulless & clinical/mechanical/unoriginal to me. One of those guy's who can play a solo note for note and still not even come close to matching the original. His own stuff is mega-unmemorable, even back when he was still in Jag Panzer..

Drover is a 'meat & potatoes' sort of player. I quite liked his old/own band Eidolon, but he was nothing special in Megadeth (or any of the other bands I've heard him in.)

Al Pitrelli is a good player but I have'nt heard him in Megadeth..

Have'nt even heard of the Albert guy & Jeff Young got the job done in So Far, So good..but that's it..

Dystopia is actually a nice Album, its Megadeth right around Rust and Countdown and I think Adler had a lot on it to be that away.

This proves shit of course... but Glen version was atrocious... Being a DVD I dont know how they didnt even edited it (song seems slower as well)

It'd be morbidly interesting to hear his rationale behind this list.

Broderick being that low definitely smacks of sour grapes, and Poland should rank above Drover (even though I do like Glenn's playing). With Pitrelli, Drover and Young, I always got the impression they were quite constrained by Mustaine compared to the other guys, which would explain why they had less overall musical impact on the band. No idea whatsoever what Mike Albert is doing there...

From a technical standpoint: Kiko can do everything Broderick can do and some. He does all the crazy tapping just like Broderick too. However, I like Kiko from a writing standpoint better. Chris - Listen to Angra's "Rebirth" & "Temple of Shadows," there is some mesmerizing playing on both those albums by Kiko and not to short is his counterpart either Rafael Bittencourt.

IIRC, Rafael wrote the biggest chunk of the songs in Angra. Thing is with Broderick though, I don't think we've really heard much of him as a writer, apart from Act of Defiance. Most of the time, he's there as the spotlight shredder rather than a writing partner. Does anyone remember his Industrial Eden stuff though?

I'll be honest. Besides a couple of things with Drover, I loved him in Megadeth. I think United Abominations was a solid metal album with Drover.

Of course, Kiko is at the top for Dave because he is currently in the band. However, he's contributed some great stuff and I still cannot believe he has a grammy. <3
I love he's in the band. Super nice guy and Broderick too. Hate he left but completely understand after talking with him.

Friedman will always be the King of that band being the sideman-guitarist or Poland (depending on who you talk to obviously).

Start @ 1:17 to skip the nonsense.

Ok. I knew Poland was amazing but I had no idea his solo was that complex in Peace Sells. Jeez.
Back then that definitely would have been a big deal for his time.
